Sen. Joe Manchin (D.W.Va.) is expected to be one the GOP’s top targets as it seeks to regain control of the Senate in 2024. One Republican has already been named as a possible challenger.
Patrick Morrisey, West Virginia Attorney General and unsuccessful 2018 Senate candidate, told The Hill that he was “evaluating options” for the Senate race and is “looking very closely.”
“Sen. Manchin was deeply disappointed by West Virginians, and let them down greatly when he supported the “Build Back Broke” bill last summer. This legislation really hurt our state. Morrisey explained that you can make the pig look any way you like, but that the bill will hurt West Virginians.
Manchin obstructed President Joe Biden’s original Build Back Better plan, but ultimately he was the decisive vote for the renegotiated Inflation Reduction Act.
The outlet also lists Gov. The top 2024 challengers for Manchin are Jim Justice (R), and Rep. Alex Mooney(R). Justice has a term limit, and Mooney won a tough GOP primary in West Virginia’s 2nd Congressional District. This was after the state lost a seat to the new census.
The Senate seats up to election in 2024 will favor Republicans heavily. Democrats face the possibility of having to defend seats in GOP-friendly States like West Virginia, Montana and Ohio.
