Saturday’s announcement by The Carter Center that former President Jimmy Carter will be entering hospice care at his home after a few hospital visits.

Hospice care is provided to patients with terminal illnesses who have less than six months left to live, according to the Mayo Clinic. It provides pain relief and quality care while still attending to each patient’s individual needs.

Carter has experienced multiple health problems in recent years. These included a brain injury that required surgery in November 2019; a cyst infection in December 2018; multiple falls in 2019; and a bladder infection in December 2019. In 2015, he also had a bout of cancer.

The last president to die was George H.W. Bush, who died in 2018.

The Carter Center said that the Carter family wanted privacy and was grateful to his many admirers.
