Police said that a woman who deliberately set fire to a Target store last week in Southern California did it as a distraction from her stealing baby formula.
Authorities said that the fire started by Cynthia Torres on Sept. 5, at a retail chain in Buena Park, caused $500,000 worth of damages, and $1 million in retail losses. The damage was mainly due to smoke and water, they added.
Firefighters from the Buena Park Police Department and Orange County Fire Authority were called to the scene and put out the fire.
Witnesses said that the fire had reached the ceiling of the store after it burned through the section for children’s clothes. Investigators believe the fire was deliberately set as a distraction for Torres while she stole baby formula.
She was arrested Tuesday. The authorities have not disclosed any additional information about her case, including specific charges.
According to jail records, Torres is currently being held at the Orange County Jail on a $250,000 bond. She will appear in court on Thursday.
