Trump Moves Left, Attacking Pro-Lifers

2023 is off to a resounding start, with the most pro-life president of the post-Roe v. Wade era blaming pro-lifers for the Republicans’ disappointing showing in the midterm elections. After being widely blamed for that poor showing, Donald Trump struck back on New Year’s Day, writing on Truth Social: “It wasn’t my fault that the Republicans didn’t live up to expectations in the MidTerms. I was 233-20! It was the ‘abortion issue,’ poorly handled by many Republicans, especially those that firmly insisted on No Exceptions, even in the case of Rape, Incest, or the Life of the Mother, that lost large numbers of Voters. Also, the people that pushed so hard, for decades, against abortion, got their wish from the U.S. Supreme Court, & just plain disappeared, not to be seen again. Plus, Mitch stupid $’s!”

Trump’s greatest achievement was his appointment of three pro-life Supreme Court justices. Roe v. Wade was finally overturned. Ruth Bader Ginsburg was the Left’s Supreme Court here. She acknowledged that the decision was poorly thought out and was based on weak (at worst) Constitutional foundations. It was also a poor piece. Donald Trump, despite his shortcomings and public life, won the gratitude of prolifers. He was the one who laid the groundwork for ending judicial tyranny. Each state was able to make its own abortion laws, and if necessary repeal them.

It would be reasonable to expect that any candidate responsible for such an achievement would work hard and run on it. Trump is busy running the other way. Trump says that Republicans failed to handle the abortion issue, especially those who insist on No Exceptions, regardless of whether it was Rape, Incest, or the Life of the Mother. However, these candidates were absent from the 2022 midterm elections. Trump is talking about something entirely different.

Trump seems to think that pro-life positions are a burden to Republicans in the polls. However, a quick look at the records shows otherwise. Brian Kemp tweeted that he was pro-life and not apologetic about it. He said, “As Secretary of State, we twice sued the Obama Justice Department to stop illegal voters from voting.” He defeated Stacey Abrams in 2022. This is a perennial rising star of the Democrat Party, establishment media, and the Democrat Party.

Trump’s claim that pro-life voters received their wishes from the U.S. Supreme Court was false and that they “just disappeared” is not supported by any evidence. According to the media, young women would vote for Republicans. However, Trump’s claim that pro-life voters got their wish from the U.S. Supreme Court is false and that they “just plain disappeared” is not supported by any evidence.

Trump was right to state that “Mitch’s stupid $” had a negative effect on the election. This was an ancillary point made many times by others, and it didn’t outweigh Trump’s decision to abandon his base to criticize it. As they hate Trump passionately and immovably, this strategy is almost certainly a failure. His move to the Left will only alienate his core supporters.

It’s a shame. Trump was an extremely effective president. I gave him the highest possible rating. But is Trump himself aware of what made his presidency so successful? At this point, the answer to that question is unclear at best.
