Trump Brings Laughter to Al Smith Dinner, Skirting the Big Elephant in the Room

The Al Smith Dinner has a long-standing tradition that is as revered as the State of the Union. It raises funds for Catholic charities. Kamala Harris, the Vice President and Democrat candidate selected by the Democratic Party, decided to not attend. This was something that a major presidential candidate hadn’t done in over 40 years. Harris’ refusal only made it more obvious that she wasn’t there. She was the elephant in the room without even being there. Jim Gaffigan, the comedian and master of ceremonies, had a rare moment of humor when he roasted her about this.

Harris also aired a lame video in which the SNL character Mary Katherine Gallagher, played by Molly Shannon (who is now way past her prime), did a sycophantic piece before Harris read off a script. The 2024 equivalent of “phoning in.”

Harris does not choose the best employees. If the stories about her being a bad boss are true, then no one who is competent will want to work for her. She refused to attend the dinner, citing that it would humanize Trump as an “existential threat” to democracy. Her interview with Fox News on Wednesday also showed that she is unable to take criticism.

Clay Travis, the founder of Outkick and radio host, has a finger on the pulse to see what the cost is.

Harris’ only viral clips are her angry Wisconsin stump speech on Thursday and the Fox News/Bret Baier fiasco. The Harris-Walz campaigns are not doing well if optics is the only indicator.

Trump did what he does best: he took advantage of the situation and made the entire room laugh for 25 minutes with mostly funny jokes. Here are some of the Trump moments that got the most laughs.

Trump made beautiful hay about Harris’ running mate for the VP, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz

Al Smith Dinner in New York City “I would like to thank Jim Gaffigan, our M.C. Jim Gaffigan is our M.C. for this evening. Jim Gaffigan has played Tim Walz most recently on Saturday Night Live. It was a fun gig for a short time, Jim. Unfortunately, Governor Walz himself is not here. Don’t worry. He’ll claim that he is.”

He then mocked “White Dudes for Harris.”

Trump’s troll was a visibly uneasy Sen. Chuck Schumer, Majority Leader.

Letitia James, New York County’s District Attorney, and New York Attorney-General Letitia Cote were also targeted.

Donald Trump looks relaxed, confident, and in control, less than 19 days before the November 5th election. Kamala Harris…not quite. Harris-Walz responded to Trump’s roast. This is not only unnecessary but also unprecedented.

Donald Trump complained that he could not use a teleprompter, and struggled to read notes from his handlers. He was unable to read his scripted notes and he screamed at the audience when they refused to laugh. In the rare instances when he strayed from his script, he would ramble on incomprehensibly, reminding Americans of how unstable he had become. He made the whole thing about him. He may not release his medical records but he shows the American public every day that he’s not fit for the job.

I think the lady projects too much. Many Americans, including the Al Smith Dinner attendees, know who’s unstable and who’s not.

Harris is trying to make it through with the help of her friends.

The contrast is stark. Even when they are opposed, one candidate is always there. The other candidate hides and shrinks.

The Tweet continues:

I’m not a huge Trump fan. He is who he truly is.

Kamala isn’t sure what she even is.

I’ll give him credit for some things. Attending the Al Smith Dinner when he is hated by the majority of the audience and smiling?

Are you willing to take a risk with anyone who will give him a place to present his case? He continues with hostile hosts. Why?

He’s not speaking to them. He is talking to the audience, not them.

Compare that with Harris. An interview that was perfectly normal with the expected questions asked, was deemed “hostile”.

Bret Baier was not combative. She was. She becomes flustered when specificity locks her in.

Trump does not change his message to a particular crowd. He will talk tough about the border when he’s speaking to a Latino crowd.

He will speak about crime in an urban setting.

He may lose. He’s still aggressive, and I respect that.

Trump’s popularity is rising, and he may even increase his votes. We will see what happens.
