How Mitt Romney Convinced Me to Support J.D. Vance

J.D. Vance was a poor choice for Trump’s running mate. Trump doesn’t need Vance in Ohio, and Vance performed poorly in the Senate when he won in 2022. However, Vance is a far better pick than Gov. Doug Burgum.

I was hoping Trump would choose Tim Scott as his Vice President. Scott was an inspirational figure and could have helped the GOP regain black voters who had previously supported the Democratic Party.

I wasn’t sold on Donald Trump for most of 2016, so Vance might grow on me.

Vance’s life story is equally compelling. Domestic violence and drug abuse by his mother ruined his childhood. Vance was born into poverty in Appalachia and was placed with his grandparents.

Vance is a conservative and has been for a long time. His conservative rating averages 61% while Vance’s conservative ranking over his lifetime is 93%.

McKay Coppins, Mitt Romney’s biography, wrote an article for The Atlantic in September 2023. Vance, a good example, is another great way to convince yourself. McKay Coppins wrote an article for The Atlantic in September 2023.

As Romney surveyed the crop of Republicans running for Senate in 2022, he noticed a trend of more candidates resembling Josh Hawley. Among the most concerning was J.D. Vance, the Republican candidate in Ohio. “I don’t know that I can disrespect someone more than J.D. Vance,” Romney confided. They had first met years earlier when Romney read Vance’s best-selling memoir, “Hillbilly Elegy.” Romney was so impressed with the book that he invited Vance to his annual Park City summit in 2018. Vance, who grew up in a poor, dysfunctional family in Appalachia and graduated from Yale Law School, had seemed bright and thoughtful, with intriguing ideas about how Republicans could attract the white working class without embracing toxic Trumpism. However, in 2021, when Vance decided to run for Senate, he completely reinvented his persona overnight. Suddenly, he was railing against the “childless left,” denouncing Indigenous Peoples’ Day as a “fake holiday,” and accusing Joe Biden of manufacturing the opioid crisis “to punish people who didn’t vote for him.” The rapidity of Vance’s MAGA transformation was startling.

Mitt Romney stated, “I cannot think of anyone that I would dislike more than J. D. Vance. ”

What could be a better endorsement?
