Since her victory in 2021, Winsome Earle Sears has become a favorite among Republicans and conservatives. She was accompanied by Republican Governor Glenn Youngkin as well as Attorney General Jason Miyares. Earle-Sears’ no-nonsense attitude and commitment to conservative values have made her popular with the political right.
Earle-Sears has taken the next step by putting her name forward for the Virginia governorship race in 2025.

Youngkin cannot run for governor in 2025 because Virginia’s Constitution prevents consecutive terms.
Earle-Sears submitted paperwork on Wednesday to run for Commonwealth’s top position.
Lt. Gov. The Virginia Department of Elections accepted Earle-Sears’ statement of organization, which is required to launch a political campaign.
Earle-Sears had been expected to enter the race for governor and she recently confirmed that she was considering a bid. She is the only Republican to file paperwork to run in the 2025 elections.
Earle-Sears, a former delegate from Norfolk who now serves as the lieutenant governor of Virginia, is a former state representative. Earle-Sears is the first Black Republican woman to be elected to the Virginia General Assembly. She emigrated to Jamaica as a child and served with the Marines before running for office.
Earle-Sears, if she wins the Republican nomination in November 2025, will be facing off against U.S. Rep. Abigail Spanberger.
Earle-Sears is yet to make a formal announcement about her decision. She will host a special event Thursday night at an oyster bar near Virginia Beach.
