JD Vance (R-Ohio) accused Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz of lying about his veteran status and evading his military service on Wednesday.
Vance made this statement when he was answering questions from reporters during a Detroit campaign rally. Vance was asked by a reporter about Walz’s attempts to portray him as an elite member who attended Ivy League schools.
“I come from a family in which no one had ever attended law school. I was raised in a very poor family. Tim Walz is trying to make it look bad, but I think that working myself through law school, and college and making something for myself, to me, is the American Dream. Vance then launched into a tirade against Walz.
“As a Marine, who has served his country as a Marine in uniform, I went to Iraq when the United States of America requested that I go and serve my country. “I did what they asked, and I did so honorably,” said Walz. When Tim Walz’s country asked him to go to Iraq what did he do? He left the Army, and let his unit go without him. This is something that many of his former colleagues have criticized him for.”
Vance added, “It’s shameful for you to prepare your unit and promise to go, only to pull out just before you have to leave.”
Vance then went on to mention Walz’s comments on gun control. He said that the governor used his questionable history as a military man to try to push for gun restrictions.
“He said that we shouldn’t let weapons I used in the war be on American streets. When did you fight in a war, Tim Walz? When was that? What weapon did you carry into war when you left your unit just before they left for Iraq and he had not spent one day in a battle zone? Vance said, “What bothers me most about Tim Walz are the phony claims of valor stolen.”
Vance also encouraged reporters to hold Walz, and Vice President Kamala Harris accountable. Harris hasn’t taken any questions from the media in the 17 days since Biden dropped out and endorsed Harris for the 2020 presidential race.
Former President Trump has accused Harris of hiding behind her teleprompter even as Biden “hid in his basement.”
