Republican Florida Governor Ron DeSantis declared victory on Tuesday night over the defeat of two amendments that would have created, respectively, a constitutional right for abortion and legalized marijuana recreationally.

“With the polls closed in Florida, Amendment 3 is a failure.” DeSantis wrote to X, “Amendment 4 has failed.” Shortly after Florida’s polls closed.

Both amendments will fail, as 60% of Florida voters did not approve them after the polls closed at 7 p.m.

Amendment 3 would have allowed recreational marijuana to be sold, as it is increasingly legalized across the country. DeSantis, who is also a proponent of abortion rights, signed The Heartbeat Protection Act, which prohibited most abortions beyond six weeks gestation, into law in 2017.

Florida voters voted this year on Amendment 4, Right to Abortion Initiative. This initiative aims to overturn the abortion ban.

Fox News Decision Desk predicted earlier on Tuesday that Donald Trump, the former president of the United States, would win Florida in general elections.

Social media users who are conservative and pro-life celebrated DeSantis’ victory lap after the reported failure of the amendments. They called Amendment 4’s expected failure a “huge win” for life.

Marjorie Dannenfelser, President of SBA Pro-Life America said on Tuesday that the demise of pro-abortion Amendment 4 was a victory for Florida’s life and the entire nation. “Thanks, Gov. When we wake tomorrow, Ron DeSantis will ensure that babies with beating heartbeats are still protected in Florida.

“The law will continue to protect more than 50,000 people yearly.” Florida is an example of other states in the country that still allow abortions after a baby feels pain. It’s also a model of how the pro-life movement can win future ballot measures. “In a world in which the abortion lobby controls our major institutions and the pro-life movement is unable to win ballot measures, Republicans should be inspired by Ron DeSantis’ courage and leadership as he exposed the agenda of Big Abortion and defeated life-ending amendments,” added Sherry.

“March for Life applauds Florida’s people for seeing through a barrage of well-funded lies, and for rejecting the radical destructive Amendment 4. Voters reject dangerous abortion amendments that appear on their ballots when they know the truth. We thank Governor DeSantis for his courage and steadfastness in supporting the most vulnerable. He also used his resources and his platform to combat the disinformation of Amendment 4 supporters whose massive financial advantage wasn’t enough to push this dangerous and deceptive proposal through.

Amendment 4 was a hot issue during the early campaigning cycle. Reporters questioned Trump on how he would vote in this matter as he lives in Florida. “You need to give yourself more than six weeks.” Since the beginning of the primaries, I have been against this. As soon as I heard of it, I was not happy. “At the same time, Democrats are radicals because the nine-month period is a ridiculous situation”, Trump said in August.

You can then have an abortion after the ninth month. You know, in some states like Minnesota, and others, it is possible to execute a baby after its birth. All of this stuff is unacceptable. “I’ll vote no because of that,” he said.

Trump sparked the anger of many conservatives who are pro-life when he said in August that Florida’s six-week ban on abortion was “too short.” Later, he said he would not vote for the Florida Amendment and reiterated that the state should decide on abortion laws.
